I designed our own version of direct messaging. Our main difference is that you could message someone who chose you as an answer, and they have the option of revealing their identity to you.

Many users use the app as a way to flirt with people in their immediate social network. In fact, many relationships are formed through "identity reveals" through identity taking place on Snapchat and Instagram (i.e., the most common caption on our app screenshots is “hit me up”).

Most brands and apps go for an all-access immediate approach. We strategically didn't do that, and instead, only granted access to the app, one state at a time. Limiting to one state allowed us to build on exclusivity and blew up demand. 100% of our marketing effort went on targeting the community, not the product.
